Research has proven that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a fairly new non-medication treatment that can completely cure depression in many patients.
In a study highlighted by the American Psychiatric Association, it showed that up to fifty eight percent of patients with major depression showed a positive response to NeuroStar’s transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment, and over thirty seven percent of patients being completely cured.

As reported in The Wall Street Journal, “After an average of five weeks of NeuroStar treatment, the percentage of patients reporting
extreme problems with anxiety and depression decreased by 42.2 percent, demonstrating a reduction in depression symptomatology. For overall treatment effect, the percentage of patients reporting no problems in performing usual activities improved by 30.5 percent.”
This TMS device created by NeuroStar was approved by the FDA in 2008 and has been gaining in popularity since that time. In general, this device has been utilized for patients who have been unsuccessful after a trial of antidepressants. Thus, this treatment is recommended for individuals who have clinical depression and who have had trouble responding to other treatments. It is not recommended for people with psychosis, Bipolar Disorder, or with high risks of suicide.
The treatment consists of approximately 40 minutes of placing an electromagnetic coil on your forehead. The coil positively impacts depression by stimulating nerve cells in your brain that involve mood control. In general, the procedure is provided over a four to six week period of time.
