interest in previously enjoyed activities, a significant amount of weight gain/weight loss (more than 5 lbs in one month), psychomotor agitation (restlessness such as pacing, tapping fingers, or meaninglessly moving objects around), trouble sleeping enough or sleeping too much, trouble concentrating, psychomotor retardation (slowing down of thought and physical movement), suicidal thoughts or attempts, feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, loss of energy most days.
Overcoming Depression | Build Your Self-Esteem
We all feel down every now and then just as everyone gets a cold. We cannot avoid every emotional upset just as we cannot avoid every illness. In order to prevent emotion upsets it’s important that we take steps to prepare ourselves with a plan in the unfortunate case that we find ourselves in a bout of depression.
Our level of self-esteem is one of the best determinants of our ability to cope with and overcome depression. Individuals with a high self-esteem have a greater ability to maintain happy and healthy relationships, feel more satisfaction in life, create and accomplish goals, have a greater level of confidence that they can handle life’s upsets, and can more easily work through the ups and downs of life. Individuals with a low self-esteem experience a greater sense of life being out of their own control, are more likely to be overwhelmed by stress, will avoid accepting challenges and setting goals for fear of failure, and will expect failure.
The development of our self-esteem is an effective way of preventing and overcoming depression. Ways to build our self-esteem include: 1) Honesty in regards to our strengths and weaknesses – identify weaknesses and either accept them or work toward improvement, and highlight our strengths and build on them. 2) Be willing to improve – hold onto the belief that you can improve your weak points and always make efforts to develop your strengths. 3) Always do your best – make continual efforts to do the best you can in all things, but understand that it is perfectly okay and normal if you’re not perfect every time because no one is. 4) Set personal goals and do something small to work toward them every day – taking action and completing tasks is one step toward overcoming depression. Do not compare yourself to others; it is important that you have personal goals to stay focused and to give your life some form of purpose.
